Privacy policy — Stayline
Last updated 1 October 2026
This policy explains what Stayline ("the app"), published by Escape Plan Software Ltd, collects, why, and the choices you have. It is specific to Stayline and takes priority over the general company policy at escapeplan.software/privacy for anything the two disagree on.
Who we are
Escape Plan Software Ltd is a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17262078, with its registered office at Suite 10906, 5 Brayford Square, London E1 0SG, United Kingdom. We are the data controller for Stayline. You can reach us at support@escapeplan.software.
The short version
Stayline collects no personal data. Your trips, your day-by-day records and, if you turn it on, your location history are stored on your iPhone, and anywhere else only if you put them there yourself: your own backup, or a journal file or report you export. The app has no account, no server, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The country you are in is worked out on your iPhone from a map built into the app, without any network connection. Nothing you enter or record is sent to us or to anyone else.
What Stayline uses, and where it stays
- Account: None. The app does not ask for your name, email, passport number or any sign-in.
- Trips you enter: country, entry and exit dates, an optional note, whether a stay was under a residence permit or long-stay visa and, for trips you import from a spreadsheet or calendar file, the date of the import. Stored only on your device, to count your days.
- Other travellers: if you add people who travel with you (Settings → Travellers), the name you give each one and their trips. Their name appears on their alerts and reports. Stored only on your device.
- Day records and corrections: for each day, the countries you were in, the country at midnight, where that information came from (automatic, manual, corrected or estimated) and the history of any changes you made. Stored only on your device, so the reports can show how each day was established.
- Location (optional, off by default): only if you switch on the automatic log and allow location access. The app then receives a location from iOS when you move a significant distance (about 500 metres or more), when you arrive at or leave a place you stay, and when you open the app. It does not use continuous GPS. For each location it stores the time (for a place you stay, the arrival and departure times), latitude and longitude, the accuracy iOS reports, speed and altitude if available, your device's time zone, what triggered it (moving, arriving, leaving or opening the app), and the country it falls in, or that it was near a border, at sea or in a disputed area. The country is found on your iPhone using public-domain boundary data from Natural Earth; no network lookup is made. Locations that look like they were recorded in flight are kept but not counted. The app never sends it anywhere; it leaves your device only in your own backup (see Backups) or if you export your journal yourself (see Journal file below). The automatic log keeps recording whether or not you have a subscription. You can turn it off at any time in Stayline (Settings → Location → Automatic log; without a subscription, Your Data on the subscription screen has Turn Off Automatic Log) or remove location access in iOS Settings → Stayline → Location. Turning the log off keeps what was recorded until you use Delete All Data, which removes all of Stayline's data.
- Settings: your counters, home-country rule, alert choices and similar preferences and, if you give them, your answers to "I live in Gibraltar" and "UK resident in any of the last 3 tax years?". Stored only on your device.
- Backups: like other app data, everything above can be included in your own iCloud or computer backup of the device, which Apple and you control and we cannot access.
- Reports: the PDF and CSV reports are created on your device. They leave it only if you choose to share or save them somewhere, for example by email or to Files. Where they go is then your choice and under the terms of that service.
- Journal file: Settings → Export Journal saves everything above, location history included, as one file in a place you choose, for example Files or iCloud Drive; where it goes is then your choice. Import Journal… replaces everything in the app with such a file, and Import Trips from a File… adds trips from a spreadsheet or calendar file you pick.
- Notifications: if you switch on limit alerts or renewal reminders, the app schedules local notifications on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
- Purchases and subscriptions: Apple handles payment through the App Store. We never see your card details. The app checks Apple's signed record of your subscription on the device to unlock the app. Apple gives us sales reports that do not identify you.
- Age range: in regions where the law requires it, iOS may tell the app your age range (for example 18 or over). The app keeps this in memory only; it is not stored or sent anywhere, and it does not change what you can do in the app.
- Analytics or crash reporting: None. The app contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting code. If you have chosen in iOS to share analytics with app developers, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports under Apple's own terms.
- AI features: None.
- Support messages: if you email support@escapeplan.software, we keep the message and your email address to reply and keep a record. Please do not send us your location history or reports unless we ask for a specific part to fix a problem.
Why we use this data
- Trips, day records, location and settings on your device: to provide the day counts, reports and alerts you asked for (performance of our contract with you). Location is used only if you switch the automatic log on and allow it (your consent through iOS, which you can withdraw at any time).
- Support emails: to answer you (our legitimate interest in helping people who contact us).
- Purchase records from Apple: to meet accounting and tax obligations.
Who we share data with
Stayline itself sends nothing to us or to any third party. Links to our website and to official rule pages (for example EUR-Lex, GOV.UK or the IRS) open in Safari's in-app view only when you tap them. Apple distributes the app and processes payments. If you email us, the message passes through Cloudflare (which routes mail for our domain) and our mailbox provider, as described in the company privacy policy. We do not sell personal data and do not share it with advertisers.
International transfers
The app transfers nothing. For support emails, Cloudflare, Inc. is based in the United States and certified under the UK Extension to the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework; our mailbox provider may store messages outside the UK, in which case we rely on the UK's adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum.
How long we keep data
Data in the app stays on your device until you delete it. Delete All Data (in Stayline's Settings, or under Your Data on the subscription screen) removes every trip, traveller, location record, correction and setting; if the automatic log is on, it stays on and keeps recording from then, so turn it off first if you want it to stop. Deleting the app removes everything too. Journal files you exported and reports you shared stay where you put them. There is no copy on our side. Support emails are kept for up to two years after the last message in the conversation, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to how we use it, or to receive a copy in a portable format. For Stayline, the only personal data we could hold is a support email you sent us; everything else is on your device. With or without a subscription you can export all of it (Settings → Export Journal, or Your Data on the subscription screen), get a report of every recorded day, and delete it (Delete All Data, also under Your Data). Email support@escapeplan.software and we will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Information Commission (the ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Children
Stayline is a general-audience app. It is not directed at children under 13, it is not in the App Store's Kids category, and it does not collect personal data from anyone. If you believe a child has sent us personal data by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we update the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects how we use your data, the app will tell you the next time you open it.
